# Mia Mottley — Inaugural Lecture at Paris Climate School

« Leaders are meant to lead. »  
  
That was the message at the heart of the inaugural lecture delivered by **Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados**, to the first cohort of Sciences Po’s Paris Climate School.  
  
Throughout her address, she highlighted several major challenges that the next generation of climate leaders will have to confront:

*    the climate crisis as a social, economic and political crisis, not simply an environmental one,
*   the growing gap between existing international institutions and today’s global challenges,
*   the need to reform global finance and make more resources available for climate resilience and adaptation,
*   the inequalities faced by small island and developing states on the front lines of climate impacts,
*   the links between climate, migration, food, water, insurance and geopolitical instability,
*   the importance of combining science, economics, technology, justice and political courage.

Her message was clear: climate leadership requires more than expertise. It demands persistence, realism, moral courage and the ability to build global movements capable of turning ambition into action.  
  
« History doesn’t move in a straight line. »  
  
And to the students beginning this new chapter, Mia Mottley issued a direct challenge: understand your role in history, learn how to lead, and help create the institutions and coalitions the world now needs.
